About me...

Hello again, I am Aaliyah Briggs, a senior studying civil engineering and sustainability at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. I have always had a growing fascination for designing and building things. I am driven to improve my skills and accumulate knowledge that can further me on my path to success in the engineering field. Learn more about me below with some questions I have been asked in the past. Have any questions? See my contact page to get them answered!

As a child, I had a passion for engineering, construction, and architecture. I naturally formed this passion by simple exploration. Growing up with a single-parent, in low-income home I had to find ways to entertain myself.  Going out with friends to the movies or playing the latest video game wasn't an option for me. I had to entertain myself with whatever was lying around the house on my own while my mom did her homework as a teen mom.  I didn't have much in terms of entertainment and toys for a child so I had to get creative. This led to many hours of exploring, building, and figuring out how things worked. I learned at an early age engineering had my name written all over it. From the beginning, I remember my mother telling me to clean my room. I know what you're thinking, typical kids have toys and clothes on the floor but not me. I had projects, wood, tools, scrap parts from toys, and blueprints (aka pictures drawn with a crayon that could only be deciphered by an 8-year-old) covering my floor. It got better as I grew older; by better, I mean a cleaner room, as for the projects that are still ongoing weekly. At an early age, I began helping my grandparents fix houses. My grandpa taught me so many tips and tricks during our long hours on taking down walls and putting walls up, installing lighting and plumbing, and building many more things. From then on I was and still am motivated by this passion of engineering to obtain as much knowledge as I can get my hands on.

Where did engineering come from?

Why did i choose rose?

When I came to rose not only did it meet the rigorous academic needs I am looking for but also my social, athletic, and personable needs which make up who I am. When I began my tour at Rose, a feeling swept through me. Rose gave me this comfort of being where I was supposed to be as I explored the history, people, environment, academics, and resources that make up the campus. The uniqueness captured me. I felt a sense of belonging among the other students as they learned and socialized. I interacted with students and faculty who shared with me that Rose is its people. Seeing the growing diversity of people intertwined with the passion for creating and problem-solving made me feel like I belonged. I made my way through the campus in the midst of nowhere with confidence that I can become an engineer and gain life experiences at the same time. Being able to get prestigious academics, real-world experiences through projects and collaboration stood out to me, along with the culture, growing diversity and unique atmosphere. Rose has every aspect I had been looking for in an institution. In the days after my visit at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, my inner voice told me, "They are all just like me; this is my home away from home".

What are my future aspirations?

I have been working to achieve my short-term goals which are to seize any opportunity that can benefit my future endeavors and have some fun during college. I plan to strive for my best through my classes and gain real-life experiences through internships and projects so I can set myself up for a successful career. In the future, I aspire to have a career that I will love and to be able to support myself. I plan on getting my masters in civil engineering at Rose-Hulman which has a focus on structural engineering. I believe this will allow me to take beneficial courses that are not seen in an undergraduate program such as Concrete Design 2, Structural Design in Prestressed Concrete, Steel Design 2, Connections and Detailing, Foundation Engineering, Retaining Structures, and more.

What do i enjoy outside of school?

  • Sports: Volleyball and Track

  • Clubs: Skiing/Snowboarding Club, Society of Women in Engineering, ASCE

  • Hobbies: Hiking, Camping, Woodworking, DIY Projects

  • Fun: Enjoying friends and family
