Innovative Drone Project
I was given the opportunity to build a new service from the ground up for J&L Dimensional. I developed and tested the roofing and site inspections with unmanned aerial vehicles for the company's future use. My research consisted of gathering data and running a study using the Mavic 2 Zoom (UAV). The data was used to scan and stitch together imaging, thus creating a 3D model or point cloud. I worked with the Mavic 2 Zoom drone to scan construction sites, buildings, and landscapes. During the data collection process, I ran into a major setback. The drone was not yet compatible with the flight and analysis software the company wanted to use. I spent days researching ways to come up with a logical and cost-efficient solution. Weighing costs and benefits I came up with the idea of purchasing a new drone, the Phantom 4 RTK, that would actually benefit our cause times ten. I presented my data collection for the current drone, all of my research, the different solutions, costs, and the benefit of having a new drone. All my hard work was successful and the company decided it was in the best interest to purchase the new drone. The company upgraded to the Phantom 4 RTK drone to continue the work on the new service. Throughout the process I was able to do the data collection as well as present the data analysis, cost management plans, advantages and disadvantages, and weekly updates to the board of the company. This internship improve my communication skills tremendously as I had to speak to multiple people and clients. I now know what I need to work on to become a better speaker and in the future I plan to improve even more. As an engineer who will work in a lot of groups and speak with many clients I will need to have the best form of effective communication.
