Middough Inc.
Working at Middough Inc. as a structural intern I had the opportunity to dive headfirst into the field of Structural Engineering. The first two weeks were challenging as I had to adjust to understanding engineering plans, learning new software, and navigating multiple resources to gather the information that was necessary for the tasks I was given. Because I was working mostly with industrial infrastructure in the Midwest, I had to get significantly more comfortable with the Steel Manual. I had to really read and understand the sections in the book, especially the ones commonly used. The most important part was just knowing how to effectively navigate through the material needed and fully comprehend the information so that I could complete good work that explains my thought process well and shows where information, such as calculations, came from. As the internship continued, I became more proficient in using my resources to come up with design solutions, preliminary design calculations, and modeling designs. Throughout the summer I also worked with programs such as Tekla Tedds, Mathcad, Revit, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam. With all that Revit can do and not having used it enough to be proficient I was required to do training on the program. I was able to improve my skills as an prospective structural engineer alongside a wonderful group of coworkers that were encouraged me and pushed me to be better in this field.
