J&L Dimensional

J&L Dimensional is a 3rd party scanning and inspection company. I was able to step into a new experience where I learned many different aspects of real-world engineering. Throughout the summer, I was tasked to use and understand machines such as an Electrical Discharge Machine (EDM), a Romer Arm, Blue Light Scanners, and a Computer Numeric Control machine to inspect parts. Not only did I use modern machines to do scanning but I was required to use older methods such as using gage blocks, precision sine plates, and calipers as well. Below you can see a piece of an airplane's airfoil that I had to measure using these older methods and check for irregularities. I also accepted the opportunity to build a new service from the ground up as I developed and tested the roofing and site inspections with unmanned aerial vehicles for the company's future use. My research consisted of gathering data and running a study using the Mavic 2 Zoom (UAV). The data was used to scan and stitch together imaging, thus creating a 3D model or point cloud. I worked with the Mavic 2 Zoom drone to scan construction sites, buildings, and landscapes. I was able to do the data collection as well as present the data analysis, cost management plans, advantages and disadvantages, and weekly updates to the board of the company. This internship improved my communication skills tremendously as I had to speak to multiple people and clients. I now know what I need to work on to become a better speaker and in the future, I plan to improve even more. As an engineer who will work in a lot of groups and speak with many clients, I will need to have the best form of effective communication.
